'Married to Jonas': Kevin and Danielle Jonas make room for Daddy

Two minutes into Sunday’s premiere of the new E! reality show, set in and around Denville, Kevin Jonas and his wife Danielle are snuggling in their king-size four-poster bed when they hear Danielle’s father Bucky call “Dani!” from downstairs. By the time the couple jumps out of bed and pulls themselves together, Bucky is already up the stairs.

The couple never gave him a key to the house, Bucky says in a phone interview last week. So how did he become Denville’s least subtle cat burglar? “Ummm, between you and me and the lamppost, I know the garage door code. ‘Oh Dad, stop over and check something for me, here’s the number.’ That was their mistake.”

But Bucky does come bearing Italian pastries, so all is forgiven.

The Carlstadt-born Bucky is a retired piping contractor, who, as Kevin says in the premiere, “likes to eat. A lot. A lot.” When he learns that Dani will be hosting Kevin’s family for dinner in a few days, he has a few suggestions: arugula salad with bacon, stuffed mushrooms. shrimp scampi — “I would do it light, because you’re only talking about appetizers right now,” Bucky says.

“You know what my family loves?” Kevin counters. “Meatloaf.”

“Married to Jonas” explores the culture clash between the rambunctious Deleasa family, which includes Danielle’s mother Angela and her three brothers and sisters, and the Jonas clan, who comes across as more, er, tightly-wound. But don’t expect any table-flipping hysterics like the ones pioneered by another Jersey housewife just up I-287. “I don’t think we have the same mentality as the ‘Housewives,’ but it is a show about families,” Kevin says in a joint phone interview with his wife. And Kevin and Danielle are not trying to keep up the Kardashians, E!’s flagship clan engineered from birth, it seems, for the fame machine. Danielle, a soft-spoken former hairdresser who is actually the most low-key person in her family, in particular seems overwhelmed by the life she’s married into. She met Kevin in 2007 while they were vacationing with their respective families in the Bahamas. The Jonas brothers were raised in Wyckoff, less than a half-hour drive from Denville, and Bucky had even met Jonas’ father, Kevin Sr., a former pastor, a couple of times. “I think it was one of those things that made us closer together in that moment,” Kevin says. “We knew so many of the same places. To travel all the way to the Bahamas, and you meet someone who lives literally down the street from you makes you realize that the world is a much smaller place, and for a good reason.” Bucky says he was impressed with how polite Kevin and his brothers seemed, but he — like Danielle — didn’t really expect the vacation romance to go anywhere. Kevin called the first day they got home. “I remember from that time, almost every night the two of them would talk. Sometimes it would be really late, and they would say a prayer, and then they would go to sleep.” We’re sure that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s romance started off exactly the same way. Bucky admits he had his doubts — not about Kevin, but about the high-flying lifestyle to which his daughter, somewhat of a homebody, might be committing herself. “For Dani, it was, ‘I want to be a mom and I want to be a wife and I want my doggies.’ My concern was, this isn’t going to fit too well.” Indeed, Danielle seems taken aback when the all-business Jonas clan comes over for dinner and starts discussing the band’s upcoming tour, and how the state of Danielle’s uterus might figure into that. (For the record, Danielle says she and Kevin are not currently expecting.) Taping the reality show took some getting used to, Danielle says. “I guess you kind of a block it out. You’re in the moment and you have to have the conversation because it’s going on, and you have to talk to your husband then, or you don’t talk to him for the next two months.” The show will follow Danielle as she accustoms herself to the spotlight, Kevin as he and his brothers prepare for the next stage of their careers, and as they both consider parenthood and, with the rest of the Deleasas, confront Bucky about his ongoing health issues. This includes footage of Bucky’s one and only Pilates session: “Your body can only do certain things. I don’t care if you’re a Gumby. They wanted to make my ankle touch my ears. I told them, the next thing you hear is going to be a crack. I have a totally new respect for Pilates. And I’m not going back.” In all seriousness, Bucky did suffer a heart attack last year while visiting the Jonas clan in Texas. He had been helping the family rip out a kitchen and “pushed a little too hard,” Bucky recalls. Kevin found him by the pool and took him to the hospital, where doctors treated him with coronary stents. While recuperating, he offered a nurse $100 to fetch him a brisket sandwich from the barbecue palace he could see across the highway. “Somebody turned me in,” Bucky says, with only the faintest trace of embarrassment in his voice. “I got in trouble. I’m always in trouble. I don’t know why.” Source
